She paused to see Susan’s reaction, but her cousin’s expression was completely blank.

Deciding Susan was probably simply taking in the news, Marjorie continued.

“After he confessed his love for me, I told him I felt the same way.” She paused again, but still Susan showed no reaction. Frowning, Marjorie asked, “Are you quite well, Susan? I had hoped this news would be a welcome surprise, but you appear quite unmoved.”

Still, Susan said not a word. She didn’t move.

“I wanted to tell you before anything was made official,” Marjorie explained, feeling increasingly uncomfortable in the heavy silence. “I’m not certain where the misunderstanding may have arisen between you and Lord Sedgewick, but I hope you are not hurt by learning of my news.”
